Professional Biography

Daniel Henry is a full-time instructor of speech and communication at Lane Community College. As a teacher and coach since 1979, Henry brings a wide array of experiences to the classroom, including 31 years in Alaska as a high school and university educator, community theater dramaturge, public radio program director, oral historian, and published author. Recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Teacher-Scholar Fellowship and a Pushcart Prize, Henry writes about “frontier rhetoric” in the American West and Alaska, especially as it relates to indigenous, rural, and mainstream cultures. His book, Across the Shaman’s River: John Muir, the Tlingit Stronghold, and the Opening of the North, is being published by University of Alaska Press in 2017. In his professional quest to help young people find their voices beyond the classroom, Henry founded the Alaska Native Oratory Society, coached many national champion speakers, and directed a statewide speech educators association for a decade. Henry was drawn to Lane Community College because of the diversity of students and their educational needs in a community of talented, caring educators.
